We drove into Nannup this morning, it has all the feeling of a frontier town.
The Shire of Nannup is the second largest in the south west region, and was founded in 1834, covering some 2953 Sq.Km. It has 149 Km of sealed (tarmac) roads and 387 Km of unsealed (gravel) roads. The 2001 census set the population at 1211 in the shire, half of which lived within the town .
Nannup Town Hall
The Town of Nannup (originally Nannup Brooke) is the only town within the shire and in 1890 was said to have timber and Dairy farming as its main industries. though in current times with 85% of the shire under forest the remaining very fertile land with its high rain fall and excellent climate now has Dairy and Beef farming, as well as horticulture and hobby farming.
Nannup Hotel
The word Nannup comes from the Noongar people and is interpreted as Stopping Place.
